Tom Holland is back in the red-and-blue suit, and Chinese audiences have already given him a hero’s welcome. Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland’s return as Peter Parker on the big screen for the first time since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film that still ranks as the eighth-highest-grossing movie of all time with a worldwide total of $1.921 billion. The new entry, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, also features crossover appearances from Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. It hits domestic theaters on July 31 with a projected global opening north of $450 million, but the real early story is unfolding thousands of miles away.
China opened the film on Wednesday, two days ahead of North America, and the results have already rewritten the recent playbook for American superhero movies in the territory.
Record-Breaking Opening Day Numbers
According to The Hollywood Reporter, by 1:53 a.m. ET the film had taken in $16.5 million in China and was pacing toward a full opening-day total of $37.4 million. That figure would make it the strongest opening day for an American superhero title in China since 2019, when Spider-Man: Far From Home debuted with $36 million. Even the partial midday haul of $16.5 million had already crushed the previous post-2019 record, held by 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance at $9.4 million. Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan projects Brand New Day will ultimately finish its China run around $255 million. If it lands near that number, it would become the highest-grossing American film in the market since Avengers: Endgame’s $632.1 million in 2019.
Why This Matters After Years of Struggle
The numbers matter because they close a long chapter of disappointment. Between 2019 and 2023, Chinese regulators tightly limited the number of American superhero releases, particularly those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No Way Home never played in the territory at all. When later titles such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did arrive, they struggled to connect and underperformed. China once delivered major boosts to Marvel’s biggest successes—Endgame remains the second-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide at $2.799 billion—but local audiences have recently favored domestic productions. The clearest example is 2025’s animated hit Ne Zha 2, which became the fourth-highest-grossing movie ever and the first to clear more than $1 billion in a single market.
Spider-Man has long stood out as the exception. The character’s blend of street-level stakes, humor, and relatable underdog energy continues to resonate with Chinese viewers in a way many other cape-and-cowl heroes have not managed in recent years. Brand New Day’s early performance suggests that connection is still intact.
Whether this single strong debut signals a broader rebound for American superhero cinema in China remains to be seen. What is clearer is the immediate upside for the film itself. A robust China contribution could push Brand New Day into the conversation as one of the highest-grossing MCU titles in several years, especially when measured against a recent stretch of softer results that includes The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Marvels.
